Development Update

Development Update

As we come to the end of the first month of Far West, the time has come for a development update, detailing our plans for the coming month. First of all, now that we’re up and running, this website will be moving from daily updates to a three-days-a-week schedule. The reason for this is simple: We’re kicking into high gear on development of actual Far West products for release (the role-playing game being the first), and need to devote more

Inspirography: The Last Rites of Ransom Pride

Inspirography: The Last Rites of Ransom Pride

Let’s just get this out of the way: The Last Rites of Ransom Pride is not what many would call a “good” movie. It wears its Spaghetti-Western-by-way-of-Grindhouse pedigree right out in the open. It’s a grimy, violent road-movie, with over-the-top characters and the most gossamer-thin of budgets. It is also brilliant inspirography for Far West and wicked-awesome. The basic premise of the film is that Ransom Pride, a gun-running outlaw, gets himself killed in Mexico, and his girlfriend Juliette sets

A Look At The Clans, Part Four

Here we are with another look at the forthcoming Far West tabletop role-playing game. Over the few weeks, we’ll be taking a multi-part look at the secret society factions in the setting: The Clans of the Far West. Last time, we examined The Twin Eagle Security Agency and The Iron Dragons. In this installment: The Wandering Stars, and The Mariachis. The Wandering Stars Itinerant philosophers, rootless warrior poets, and mystics seeking attunement with nature; all long held traditions culturally supported

Inspirography: Jonah Hex

This time around, our Inspirography series takes a look at Jonah Hex. No, not the god-awful movie that came out last year: the far, far more interesting comic series that has been running on and off since the 1970s, published by DC comics, featuring the scar-faced ex-Confederate bounty hunter, Jonah Hex. Jonah is a righteous man, an avenger of the innocent, and cares deeply about staying true to his own personal honor. He’s also bitter, cynical, possessed of an acidic

Merit, Part One

Merit, Part One

by T.S. Luikart Merit found the corpse that was destined to change his life forever just before first light, staked out in a cave. It had been carefully concealed beneath a stone facade that most would’ve walked past without a second thought. Many would’ve called the discovery mere chance, but those folk wouldn’t have been ones who ever knew Cleave Merit. He’d roused early that day, sensing the unease in the court’s booming whoops. His range-cat Ripper had already been

“Binding Ties”

“Binding Ties”

by T.S. Luikart In the dusk of his life, the Venerable Sage Tinbaroo deigned to stay for a week with the Sleepless Scriveners of the Istralene Valley. The Scriveners were desperate to record all they could of Tinbaroo’s wisdom and experiences before his last breath joined the winds of the Far West, but decorum limited them to a few choice questions each evening. On the third night of the sage’s visit, a scrivener young enough to not know any better

Inspirography: Sukiyaki Western Django

This Inspirography entry takes a look at the first truly mixed-genre example that came along after development of Far West had begun. Initially, our inspiration had been pure examples of the spaghetti western and wuxia genres, along with western-inspired fantasies like Stephen King’s Dark Tower series. A mere 4 months after development had begun, however, this film was released by Takashi Miike — a brilliant director known for controversial classics like Ichi the Killer and Audition. Whereas the trappings are

Jade Ghost Story

Jade Ghost Story

by Laura Hanson Skarka Jemiah twirled the irregular green circle on its edge around the bar and flipped it across his knuckles like a coin. He couldn’t stop messing with it, hadn’t been able to since it had appeared a week before, lying next to his head on the pillow when he awoke from yet another drunken stupor. He knew what it meant. He’d ridden out of Ganneston less than an hour after waking, knowing that it would do him
