Here's the discussion thread for the big partnership announcement we just made.

If you haven't heard yet, click above and read. Short version: Cubicle 7 Entertainment will be publishing the tabletop games set in the FAR WEST universe, with me as the Line Developer. The core book for the RPG will ship this summer (first to Kickstarter backers, then to game stores worldwide). Adamant will continue to produce all other FAR WEST products (fiction, comics, web series, etc.).

As I said in the Kickstarter Update: So what does this mean for you? Aside from the book shipping to you from C7's warehouse with a C7 logo on it, not too much, to be honest -- but it does mean that TS and I are no longer working in a vacuum: we now have one of the top RPG publishers backing us up, committed to a robust release schedule once we get the core book out to you! And with me as the Line Developer, everything will still mesh together between the RPG releases and the other products.

Feel free to comment, or ask questions, below.

Hey folks--

Eventually, we'd love to produce a line of FAR WEST miniatures. We don't have the ability to produce them ourselves at the moment (3D printing is great, and I'm a passable sculptor, but I don't have the time to get up to more than "passable" :) ) -- if you know of any miniatures producers who might be interested in a license or a partnership, feel free to send them in my direction.

But until that time, we'll all have to make do with existing minis from other lines, and that's what this thread is for. Post links to miniatures that you think are especially appropriate (with pics, if you can -- our forum uses standard HTML so just use the "img src=" method).

Fire away! I'll be adding some myself in a bit.

All,

I think it's pretty clear that music could play a big role in the Far West universe. Obviously there will be a couple of thematic tropes that will be common, and appropriate, but diversity will be key here, and there may be something obvious nobody's thought of, or something obscure that would be a perfect fit.

With that in mind, I'd like to start a collection here of soundtracks, youtube links, Pandora Stations, Spotify URLs, or anything that could be used to lend some auditory immersion to the world.

I'll start with a track that, for me, seems perfect for the setting: Yoshida Brothers, Storm (http://youtu.be/Z1fTbDJiyrM)

Not sure what's happened, but we got hit with a massive amount of spam registrations over the past few days -- so much so, that it was causing memory errors in our forum software. I've been scrambling to solve the problem.

Registration is no longer set to Admin approval -- it requires entering a Captcha (yeah, I know -- they're ubiquitous) and answering a question. That should hopefully cut down on the bot registrations, but will let human spammers through. If you spot one, let me know by emailing me at gms@adamantentertainment.com.

If it gets to be an issue, I'll start appointing moderators.

In the meantime, I'll get back to my work digging through our database and getting rid of the spam registrations. If this results in anything hinky (if I accidentally delete something that causes some sort of glitch that you notice), contact me by the above address.
Hi guys, really looking forward to this game, pre-ordered the hell out of it. Quick question I had, because at this point i'm already throwing together ideas for a campaign/adventure, is this: Is it within the scope of the setting for there to be steam or coal-powered cyborgs?

My brother has come up with an interesting concept for his characters, and it involves an engineer reviving a man cursed to have his soul remain within his body, even after death. The cursed man is kept motive by a wrought iron contraption mounted on his chest and back (ala Iron Man), and powered by a coal-fired furnace.

So, anyone know if this is a valid character concept, or do I have to tell him to take it back to the drawing board?

So with 3D printing moving forward in leaps and bounds it strikes me as strange and just a little reckless that the large minifig/kit companies (I'm looking at you Games Workshop) have not started to redirect their core business. I see in the near future that hobby and model shops will move from stocking kits to maintaining a high quality 3D printer and stocking 3D printing compounds, a licence fee for each kit design they have on record and a royalty fee for each time that design is used. Even this would have limited practice as 3D printing becomes more affordable for home set-ups with the business model moving towards something more akin to iTunes for minifigs and kits. Maybe individual design companies will release an iTunes styled software front-end for 3D printers with a mix-match-n'-pose interface. You want a steampunk kungfu monk in the crane pose? Sure, go nuts. Print one, print a hundred.

Because in the near future there will be a glut of 3D design alumni that can knock out incredibly detailed designs without a care in the world for what the old guard had planned.

Just some thing to think about.

I was playing "Dishonored" and being creeped-out by Weepers and thought, "Would this be feasible in Far West?" It's a cool plot device to have some mad scientist create reanimated (or seemingly dead) horrors and I can imagine the impact of such a twist.

The PCs come across a deserted town and find blood and gore...but no bodies. They're attacked by a diseased and/or rotted animal and of course think, "What in the 9 (or however many Hells FW has) Hells was that?!". They defeat it, of course, but maybe a character (PC or NPC) is infected and slowly become more and more ill. It's now a race to save them! The water in the town's bad, and there's an obvious beaten path leading into dark, spooky hills. Maybe there's a nearly-mad survivor (even better if said survivor reminds a PC of a lost loved one).

The PCs decide to find out what's going on, the trail leads to a mine...darkness...moans, etc. And in there somewhere, is a cure (if needed). You get the idea. Something like that. :)

Or for a good ole' fashioned time, have the little town they're in get overrun with shambling hordes.

Anyway, this game has got my brain on gaming overdrive and that makes me very happy!
I thought it would be cool to share ideas for "magic" items we'd like to place in our games. Mostly, so I can steal all of your ideas! ;) I have a few, such as "Sparrow's Lament".

Sparrow was the son of a blacksmith bound in familial servitude to an Imperial magistrate. His work was art and he excelled in creating his master's favorite requests: weapons. The magistrate's daughter, Cloudless Sky was beautiful and kind; as things are often to be, Sparrow and Cloudless Sky fell in love. It was of course, forbidden and when discovered the magistrate's wrath was total. He sent guards to kill Sparrow, but he escaped. The magistrate told his daughter her love had been killed resisting arrest and the girl soon took her own life, knowing she would never be complete without her true love. Knowing the suicide of his publicly-beloved daughter would embarrass the family, the magistrate created a lie telling that Sparrow, since he could not have her, killed her and then fled.

Sparrow, upon learning of Cloudless Sky's death, began creating his greatest work: a simple, yet elegant straight-bladed sword inscribed with a poem written to his dearest love. Both the weapon and words are masterpieces. It is said that he quenched the blade in only the tears he shed for Cloudless Sky and that his blood, burning with more intensity than the fires of the forge, was used to color the inscription.

He took his masterpiece and carved a bloody swath to the magistrate's gates. All who faced the blade were stricken with an overwhelming sadness from the words adorning its length, weakening their resolve to face the weapon's wielder. Sparrow found little worthy resistance and soon stood over the magistrate's corpse. Sparrow collected Cloudless Sky's ashes and disappeared, with only rumors accounting for his whereabouts.

That was very long ago and it is told that he laid both his love and sword to rest, eventually joining them in a place often sought, but still undiscovered...

That was one of them. I obviously have no clue as to what mechanics would apply, but I'm hoping that this would fit into Far West. Basically, anyone wielding the sword for the purpose of protecting someone they love completely, grants power to the weapon. Those who face the blade suffer penalties and/or the wielder is granted bonuses (as long as it's intrinsic to the betterment of who they love). Sorry for any crappy prose/grammar! LOL

My friend came up with a whip that was carried by a cruel slaver. The black leather is stained with the blood of the countless slaves who've suffered its lashes. It grants the one carrying it bonuses to intimidating others, as long as they can see the whip (it doesn't have to be used in combat to grant the bonuses). It also causes excruciating pain to those it strikes. This will have the mechanical effect of the victim incurring penalties higher than what the damage incurred would normally place.

Gunari and Luca had just finished practicing one of the fight scenes from their comedy stage play, “Mix-up on the Western Express,” where 3 different Masters of Kung Fu have their luggage inadvertently switched. Luca headed back to the wagon while Gunari headed into town to pick up some supplies. Whistling while walking down the road, Gunari failed to notice the two skulking brigands until they jumped out of the woods, the younger one brandishing a dagger, the older one with a beard wielding a sword.
“Give us your money, and you won’t get hurt,” snarled the older man.
Gunari quickly sized up his opponents, and assumed Mockery pose, front arm extended towards the older one, with a quick hand motion luring the brigand with the sword to attack. Swinging and yelling, the brigand launched his attack, only to have Gunari perfom Position Right, assisting his opponent in a journey further down the road to land face first 6’ behind the actor.
The younger one advanced slowly towards Gunari. The actor assumed Critic’s Critique, pointing to the brigand eating dirt. “You will notice that his lunge was way overdone, and no control at all over his balance, he did trip over his own feet you know, dreadful what they are teaching ruffians these days, sad, very sad, for instance, that dagger, you are holding it all wrong…” While the younger one glanced at the dagger, Gunari struck Denouement Pose, sending the dagger one way while the younger brigand went on top of the older one who was just getting up, only to be knocked down, the wind knocked out of them both.
Gunari asked, “Would you like a proper demonstration of the use of a dagger?” At that point, both brigands looked at each other, then at Gunari, tripping over themselves they got up and ran away.

All The World's A Stage Kung Fu
Base Damage d10 4 points
+1 to Attack 1 point
+1 to Defense 1 point
Compatible with Sword 2 points
Compatible with Staff 2 points
Usable in Light Armor 1 point
Flaw: Obvious –6 points
If an accomplished martial artist has seen this particular play and knows the fight sequence, it should be an easy matter for the martial artist to defeat the actor, unless the actor switches to a different fight sequence from a different play. Also, the actor is used to performing for an audience so telegraphs his attacks with overly blatant gestures. However, if the person being attacked doesn’t know to suck in their gut at the right moment, or move an inch in the right direction to minimize the attack, the impact will hurt.
Saving Throw for ½ damage –2 points
Uses Dex for the Saving Throw 2 points
Uses (Choose one: Dex or Wits)
Key ability for this martial art 2 points
TOTAL COST 7 points

More advanced version might contain Saving Throw versus Stun 4 points from a seasoned actor that has been performing stage combat for years.

Spread The Word of FAR WEST (even more)?

The last few days I was thinking about how to possibly spread the word about FAR WEST to an even larger audience than the already existing fan base here. A possible idea I would offer for discussion is this:

Yahoo Groups just as an example has many groups / boards dedicated to PBEMs (Play-By-Email-Games) that take regular tabletop gaming to the internet. Basically it is novella style cooperative fan fiction where the story is written by the group members. Over the years I have seen and / or participated in PBEMs that covered Highlander. Star Trek, Vampire - The Masquerade or Star Wars. Some were short-lived, others are still going reasonably strong after twenty years.

There are other PBEMs that use the forum style but so far I found Yahoo Groups that best outlet for fan fic type writing.

Since FAR WEST specifically aims to cover different media, it might be appropriate as well. It creates awareness for the game (potentially at least), it is easy, it is for free and most of all it is a fun outlet for creativity even if you don´t have a group of gamers in your neighborhood to play with around a real desk.
